The Istanbul Research Center’s exhibition Journey to the Center of the East 1850-1950 documents the early (from a modern perspective) Western travelers to Istanbul, the journeyers in the age of steam and rail who wanted to explore the “exotic East”. But even in the first days of photography, tourism to Istanbul had begun to take on the aspects of contemporary mass tourism, with organized tours replacing individually planned expeditions. The photos and ephemera featured in this exhibition are from the huge archive of Pierre de Gigord, one of the world’s leading collectors of Ottoman-related items.
